Key Stage 1 (Year 1)
Children are taught in mixed ability classes with a teacher assisted by a teaching assistant. There is a focus on our core subjects English, mathematics, science and sport and as such, we expect standards to be high. We follow and go beyond the National Curriculum in the core subjects. Children develop their writing skills, writing for a range of purposes and audiences, become independent readers, grasp the fundamentals of the four number operations and participate in practical scientific investigations and experiments. Pupils continue to be taught by subject specialists for science, PE, French and music on a weekly basis. In Year 1 children are taught how to do cursive writing (joined up).
Traditional subjects like history, geography, art, technology and ICT are taught through topics (i.e. the International Primary Curriculum- IPC). RE and Personal, Social and Health Education are taught as discrete lessons when not contained within a topic. We follow the LA's locally agreed syllabus for RE where all religions are taught with an emphasis on Christianity.
We aim to give every pupil the opportunity to develop their powers of oral communication with the expectation that they will develop the confidence to present in front of an audience and participate in memorising and reciting poetry. As the academy grows, so will the enrichment programme where we currently offer subjects such as dance, eco awareness, science experiments, different sports, French and cookery.
Year 1 pupils sit a Statutory Phonics Screening Check test in Year 1 which is an assessment introduced by the Government to confirm whether individual pupils have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate level.
The core hours for children in KS1 are 8.30 a.m.- 4.00 p.m. which includes our compulsory Enrichment Programme. Enrichment activities take place three times per week during the extended hours and Maths and Literacy Enrichment on two days a week.
Attendance on Saturday mornings for a specified period is compulsory for targeted pupils from year 1. This could either be children who are gifted and talented or those requiring an additional boost in English and /or mathematics. Classes will mainly run from 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.
