The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum with its emphasis on learning through play will provide children with a happy, active introduction to school life. There will be emphasis on children developing good social and personal skills, an enquiring mind and the ability to speak using standard English but over and above all, we aim for all children to enjoy school and to be physically and cognitively prepared to get the best out of their education. The Early Years Curriculum will be enhanced by the IPC (a topic based curriculum) and specialist teaching in PE/Games, music, science and French. In addition children will have daily phonics lessons and formal literacy and maths lessons. We aim for all children to leave Reception as confident readers and writers. We expect our pupils to achieve beyond the expectations for children of a similar age.
At Paxton Academy, we follow the Read, Write Inc phonics programme (Ruth Miskin) up until Year 2.
In Reception the school day is made up of core hours (9.00 a.m. – 3.15 p.m.) and extended hours (3.15 p.m. to 4.00 p.m.). The extended provision is compulsory and ensures breadth and depth in the curriculum as well as the opportunity to enrich and extend children’s learning.
